Train drivers are due to strike again on Thursday 15 September as a result of a dispute over pay.

A 24-hour strike is due to take place across 12 companies, which will cause many services to come to a halt across the UK. Affected companies include Avanti West Coast, LNER, Great Western Railway and Northern Trains.

The action is being taken by the ASLEF union, which represents 96% of train drivers in England, Scotland and Wales.

The union said it regretted the inconvenience that would be caused to passengers as a result of the strike but said its drivers could not accept a further pay freeze, in place since 2019, which after inflation amounts to a 10% cut.

Mick Whelan, ASLEF’s general secretary, commented: “We want the companies – which are making big profits, and paying their chief executives enormous salaries and bonuses – to make a proper pay offer to help our members keep up with the increase in the cost of living.”

The strike action follows previous 24-hour walk outs by staff on 30 July and 13 August.
